Types of Water Damage Not Covered by Homeowners Insurance

If you're wondering whether your homeowners insurance policy covers water damage, it all depends on the source of the water that caused the damage. However, there are instances where your homeowners policy won't provide coverage for water damage, which includes:

  1. Neglected maintenance issues. For instance, if water damage is caused by a leaky sink that you haven't addressed for a long time, your homeowners insurance won't cover it.

  2. Repair or replacement of the source of the water damage. If your washing machine causes water damage to your laundry room floor, your policy won't cover the cost to repair or replace the machine. Nonetheless, it usually covers the floor repairs.

  3. Flood-related issues. Flood damage isn't covered by your homeowners insurance and will require separate flood insurance coverage.
